Bună. Sigur că da.
Fiecare album pe care îl creezi are o anume tematică, ce pornește, de obicei, de la o planșă cu imagini care te inspiră. Ce imagini te-au inspirat atunci când ai înregistrat ultimul tău EP, ”Emerald Island”?
(râde) Uuu, asta e o întrebare bună, dar e destul de greu să-ți descriu, pentru că ar trebui să-ți arăt imaginile. Ne-am uitat pe internet după imagini ”exotice”, în mare parte. Nu știu dacă ți-e familiar acest stil muzical (exotic)...a fost inventat, cred, în urmă cu un secol, dar a fost foarte popular în anii '60, '50. A apărut ca o reacție la faptul că oamenii începuseră să călătorească și apoi au creat muzică inspirându-se din ceea ce auzeau în acele călătorii. Vreau să spun că își imaginau că trăiesc în acele țări. Așa că au început să copieze, practic, muzica africană și au realizat și niște artwork-uri foarte drăguțe pornind de la acea muzică, așa că imaginile albumelor din acea perioadă au fost o parte a lucrurilor ce ne-au inspirat și, de asemenea, vederile din vacanță. Totul avea, practic, o anume culoare, o paletă care ne-a plăcut și pe care am folosit-o. Am încercat să-ți descriu cât am putut de bine. Mi-ar plăcea să ți le arăt.

Dacă ”Emerald Island” ar fi cu adevărat o insulă, unde ar fi poziționată geografic și cine ar locui acolo?
Ar fi foarte, foarte departe. Cred că undeva aproape de Polinezia Franceză, sau ceva de genul acesta. Ar fi un loc în care nu ai mai fost niciodată. Și cine ar locui acolo?...Ei bine, nu foarte multe persoane. Poate câțiva localnici care s-ar ocupa de barul de pe insulă, acel loc în care lumea s-ar duce să se simtă bine. Iar barul acela este pe plajă. Acolo aș vrea să duc oamenii care vin la concertele mele. Eu așa mi-o imaginez - e o insulă pustie, în esență, dar sunt, totuși, câțiva oameni care locuiesc acolo, iar dacă ai timpul necesar, poți merge acolo pentru a te bucura de cele mai frumoase momente din viața ta.
Unul dintre cele mai mari visuri ale tale este să înregistrezi soundtrack-ul unui film James Bond. Dacă te-ar suna mâine producătorii filmului Bond și ți-ar cere o piesă, ce melodie din repertoriul tău le-ai recomanda?
Cred că foarte multe dintre piesele mele s-ar potrivi pentru un soundtrack Bond. Dar dacă ar fi să aleg dintre cele recente, cred că le-aș propune "Tahitian Skies", pentru că e pe EP-ul ”Emerald Island”, și are și un vibe Bond, dar și un aer exotic. Îmi place acest crossover.
Care dintre multele soundtrack-uri Bond este preferatul tău?
Doamne, trebuie să mă gândesc la titluri. Este, cu siguranță, o piesă de-a lui Shirley Bassey. Nu "Goldfinger"...e cealaltă...nu-mi amintesc titlul. Stai puțin să văd dacă o găsesc pe internet. (După o pauză scurtă) Scuză-mă, stau foarte prost cu memoria când vine vorba de nume, titluri. (După o altă scurtă pauză) Nu reușesc să o găsesc...
E în regulă.
Ok, o să o mai caut ceva mai târziu. Oh, "Diamonds Are Forever"! (Și apoi cântă refrenul: <<Diamonds are foreveeeer>>). Asta este!
Muzica ta, stilul tău și majoritatea clipurilor tale sunt inspirate de anii '40, '50. Îți plac și filmele care se făceau în acea perioadă? Dacă nu, ce tipuri de filme îți place să urmărești?
Ei bine, diferă. Pentru acest EP, din punct de vedere muzical, am fost inspirați de genul acesta de filme, și am urmărit multe astfel de filme. M-am uitat și niște filme de Hitchcock, care mi-au plăcut foarte mult. Dar e vorba de ceva mai mult decât despre filme, e vorba despre un anume simț cinematografic. Ceea ce am folosit pentru a ne inspira, așa cum ai menționat și tu, au fost imagini și artwork-uri din acea perioadă. De exemplu, pentru videoclipul piesei ”That Man”, am fost inspirați de Saul Bass, care a făcut foarte multe intro-uri cu efecte text pentru filme. Are un stil foarte particular. Așa că genul acesta de lucruri ne-au inspirat, de asemenea, la fel cum ne-au inspirat și posterele și toate lucrurile de genul acesta.

Dar un film care mi-a plăcut cu adevărat...nu știu dacă e din anii '40 sau '50, dar e un film de-al lui Hitchcock și se numește "Rear Window". E cu Grace Kelly. Cred că ea este acel etalon care nu-și pierde niciodată strălucirea. Un mare simbol. Ea m-a inspirat foarte mult, dar cred că în definitiv m-a atras ideea de perenitate, mai mult decât orice altceva dintr-o anumită perioadă. Desigur, primul meu album a fost inspirat de anii '40 și '50, dar în esență suntem inspirați de tot ceea ce rezistă probei timpului.
În muzica ta încorporezi influențe pop și hip-hop. Ai lua în considerare ipoteza colaborării cu un artist pop sau hip-hop? Dacă da, cu cine anume ți-ar plăcea să colaborezi?
Încă o întrebare dificilă. Bineînțeles că aș lua în considerare pe oricine, dar pentru mine alegerea s-ar face după un cu totul alt criteriu - nu este vorba doar de artist în sine, ci și despre o conexiune interpersonală. Pentru că în industria muzicală de multe ori se întâmplă ca managerii să decidă că e o mișcare foarte inteligentă ca doi artiști să lucreze împreună, și apoi începi să înregistrezi ceva, și cele două persoane nici măcar nu ajung să se întâlnească. Înregistrezi în studioul tău de acasă, totul se întâmplă acolo, de la distanță, iar aceasta nu este o colaborare pe care eu mi-aș dori-o. Eu aș vrea să colaborez cu adevărat cu cineva, să mergem și să stăm în studio, să compunem ceva împreună, să creăm ceva împreună. Dar totul pornește de la o conexiune care trebuie să existe între noi, altfel nu va merge. Această conexiune este foarte importantă pentru mine.

Atunci poate ai putea să numești un artist pe care îl admiri și cu care consideri că ar fi interesant să lucrezi?

Da, știu trupa.
Stilul de muzică pe care îl fac cei de la Portishead este cu totul altfel. Muzica lor și felul în care folosesc sample-uri în piesele lor ne inspiră foarte mult. Da, ar fi minunat să colaborăm cu ei. Asta sună interesant.

Dacă ai avea o mașină a timpului, unde ai alege să călătorești? În trecut sau în viitor? Și de ce?
Uhuu...Păi cred că aș alege să merg în trecut, pentru că, în primul rând, viitorul mă sperie. Și apoi, nu aș vrea să sar peste nimic important. Dacă aș fi sărit peste ultimii 10 ani, aș fi pierdut evenimente importante. Nu mi-ar plăcea să se întâmple asta, așa că aș alege să merg în trecut. Și aș prefera să mă întorc într-o perioadă de timp în care eu nu eram în viață, pentru a cunoaște un trecut cu adevărat diferit de ceea ce am trăit până acum. M-aș întoarce, poate, în perioada adolescenței părinților mei. Asta ar fi interesant, să aflu cum era atunci.
Anul viitor, în februarie, te vei întoarce în România, la 6 ani de la primul tău show aici.

Da, primul tău show aici a fost în 2012, la B'est Fest.
Da, așa e! A fost foarte drăguț.
Ai putea să ne dezvălui câte ceva din culisele show-ului din februarie?
Da. Ei bine, se numește "Emerald Island", după titlul EP-ului pe care l-am lansat anul acesta. Întreaga atmosfera a show-ului este așa cum am menționat deja - îmi voi duce publicul pe insula mea, într-o atmosferă foarte exotică. Va fi emoționant și romantic, de asemenea, dar va fi, totodată, și o mare petrecere, în final. Îmi voi duce publicul peste tot - veți simți melancolie, puțină tristețe, poate, în anumite momente, dar va fi și suficient loc pentru a ne ridica, a dansa, a ne bucura de muzică și a cânta împreună.

Hello. Yes, I'm ready.
You always create your albums around a theme, starting, usually, with a moodboard full of pictures that inspire you. What kind of pictures inspired you to record your latest EP, ”Emerald Island”?
(she laughs) Uuu, that's a very good question, actually, but it's quite hard to describe, because I'd have to show you the pictures. We were looking around on the internet for exotica pictures, mainly. I don't know if you know this type of music (exotic)...It was invented, I think, about a century ago, but it was very popular in the 60s, 50s. Again, because people started travelling and then they started to create music as if they were travelling. I mean, as if they were from a different country. So they started copying, basically, african music and they also made a lot of nice artwork with that, so album covers for that were part of our inspiration, but also travel posters from that era. Everything, basically, had a certain colour, a palette that we really liked and used for this. That's the best I can do with describing them. I'd like to show you something.

If ”Emerald Island” would be an actual island, where would it be located geographically and who would live on it?
It would be very, very far away. I'm thinking somewhere around French Polynesia or something like that. Really like a place you've never been before. And who would live on it...well, not a lot of people. Maybe just a couple of locals that would run the bar on the island, where people would go to have a good time. And that bar is on the beach. That is where I would like to take the people that come to my shows. That's how I picture it. It's a desert island, basically, but there's a few people living there, and if you have the time you can go there and have the best time of your life.
One of your biggest dreams is to record a James Bond track. If they would call you tomorrow to ask you if you have a song for them, which of your songs would you choose to show them?
I think a lot of my songs would fit for a James Bond theme. But if I would have to name the latest, I would go for "Tahitian Skies", because it's on my ”Emerald Island” EP, and it also has that Bond vibe, and also and exotica vibe. I really like that crossover.
Which of the many James Bond theme songs is your favourite?
God, I have to think of the titles. It's definitely one of Shirley Bassey's. Not "Goldfinger"...It's the other one...I don't recall the title. Let me see if I can look it up on the internet. (After a short pause) Sorry, I'm always really bad with names. (After another short brake) I can't really find it...

Your music, your style and most of your videos are inspired by the 40s, the 50s. Are you also a fan of the movies made in that period? If not, what kind of movies do you enjoy watching?
Well, it differs, you know. For this (EP), musically, we were inspired by those kind of movies, and I have watched a lot of those. Some Hitchcock movies aswell, that I really enjoyed. But it's more than just the movies, it's also the cinematic type feel. What we used also to inspire us, as you mentioned before, were pictures and images and artwork from that time. For instance, for my video for ”That Man”, we were inspired by Saul Bass, who has made a lot of those typographic intros for movies and stuff. He has a very specific style. So that was also what we were inspired by, also posters and stuff like that.
But a movie that I specifically liked...I don't know if it's 40s or 50s, but it's by Hitchcock and it's "Rear Window". It features Grace Kelly. I think she's the ultimate timeless role model. A big icon. She inspired me a lot, but it's more about timelessness, I guess, then everything else from a certain era. Of course, my first album was inspired by the 40s and the 50s, but mainly we are just inspired by everything that is timeless.

In your music you incorporate pop and hip-hop influences. Would you consider collaborating with a pop or a hip-hop artist? And if so, with who would you like to colaborate?
That is also a very tough question. Of course I would consider everyone, you know, but there is a whole different criteria that I use - it's not just the artist itself, but also if there's a personal connection. Because what happens a lot in the music business is that managers decide that it's a very smart thing for two different artists to work together, and then you start recording something and you don't even meet each other. You just do that in your home studio, it's all done in the studio, on a distance, and that is not the type of collaboration I would look for. I would really want to collaborate, to just go and sit in the studio, to write together or something, to create something together. But that also means that you would have to have a personal connection, otherwise it won't work. That connection is very important for me.
Then maybe somebody that you admire, and it would be interesting for you to work on something together?
You know who I really admire? It's Portishead. Do you know that?
Yes, I know the band.
It's a totally different type of music. We are very much inspired by their music, by the way they use samples in their music, in their songs. Yeah, we would love to collaborate with them. That sounds interesting.

If you would have a time machine, would you choose to go to the past, or to the future? And why?
Uhuu...Well, I think I would choose to go to the past, because, for one, the future scares me. And I wouldn't want to skip anything. So ten years ahead, I would have missed something. I wouldn't enjoy that, I think, so I'll choose the past. And I would prefere to go to a place where I wasn't alive, to get to know a real different past. Maybe the time that my parents were young. That sounds interesting: to find out what was is it like.
Next year, in February, you are returning to Romania, six years after your first show here.
Really?
Yes. It was in 2012, at B'est Fest.

Could you give us a few details about the show in February?
Yeah. Well, it's called "Emerald Island". That is after the EP that we released this year. The whole atmosphere of the show is, as I mentioned before - I'm gonna' take my audience to my island, in this very exotic atmosphere. It's gonna' be exciting, and romantic as well, but it's also going to be a big party, in the end. I'm gonna' take my audience anywhere - it can be melancholy, and a little sad, maybe, sometimes, but also there's a lot of room to stand up and dance and enjoy the music and sing along.
